advice on a place to go on sixth street in austin, texas?

Q: A friend and wife will be in Austin this friday and would like to know if there is a bar or club that would be nice to go to that has oldies music. Something for a couple that just hit their fourties. Anything on or around sixth street. Help, my husband and I are total homebodies so we have no idea what to tell them. Thanks.

A: Sixth Street is largely a college-age top-40s hip hop frat party these days. There's some exceptions, but I can't think of any places that play oldies, except maybe pete's dueling piano bar. Red River has more live music venues, but it's mostly alternative stuff, not really oldies. The Warehouse district (4th street or so) has an older crowd and is more "classy" and people are usually more dressed up. If they want to go some place pretty laid back and "Austin-y", the best places near downtown are probably the Continental Club, or Donn's Depot. http://www.yelp.com/biz/petes-dueling-piano-bar-austin http://www.yelp.com/biz/continental-club-austin http://www.yelp.com/biz/donns-depot-austin-2
